What should Carlisle property owners know?
Carlisle's first settlement, Dudley, was laid out in 1846 at Keokuk's Bend on the Des Moines River, about 3 miles east of today's town. The great Flood of 1851 destroyed it, and that same year the settlement was moved to the present site and named after Carlisle, Pennsylvania, according to the city. Carlisle is about 19 miles by road from our shop at 751 NE 46th Ave in Des Moines.
The rivers are close. Carlisle lies between the North and Middle rivers near their confluences with the Des Moines River. Its early mills ran on the Middle and North rivers, and clay deposits along the North River supplied brick and tile plants into the 1960s, according to the city. River flooding is a different job from a burst pipe, and it's handled as Category 3 water.
When the railroad arrived in 1871, Carlisle's business district moved from Market Street down to the rail line along School and First Streets, and the original hilltop area became mainly homes and churches. The Union Pacific still runs trains through town, and the Summerset Trail to Indianola starts here.
